Ceramics - Bowl

Size: D. 31.2 cm, H. 6.0 cm
Origin and time: Iznik, Turkey, late 16th century
Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna
Inv. No. Ke 591
During the last third of the 16th century the floral pattern of the Iznik ceramics started to incorporate a new decorative form: the “bouquet of creased flowers”. Blue tulips, red carnations and a blue bough of blossoms are huddled in asymmetrical arrangement against the edge of the bowl. The graphical quality of the pedicel illustration is particularly highlighted by the white background. The stylized wave motifs in the border pattern almost conceal their Chinese origin. JW
